The History of the King James Version of the Bible. The King James Version dates back to 1611. This 1611 version is named after King James I of England (19 June 1566 – 27 March 1625). The first translation of the New Testament into English was made in 1526 by William Tyndale (c. 1494 – 1536) who was a 16th-century Protestant reformer who made the first English translation of the Bible. Tyndale drew directly from Hebrew and Greek texts and he was also the first to take advantage of the new medium of print. In 1604 King James I of England was persuaded by the Protestant clergy to commission a new translation to replace the Bishop's Bible which was first printed in 1568. The Authorized Version, or the King James Version was finished in 1611 and this King James version became the standard for English-speaking Protestants. Vast numbers of the King James Version were printed and these large sized Bibles were chained to every church pulpit in England.
